Introduction to Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories: Reading with Rhetorical Awareness

The lesson below is a 3-day lesson intended to be used with 10th graders in 55-minute blocks. This is a lesson I use in order to prepare students to read Rushdie’s text because of the cultural and political complexity of its rhetorical context. This lesson not only prioritizes rhetorical awareness; it also models how to approach texts from unfamiliar cultures with sensitivity and information.
